Owned and led by Dudley Metropolitan Borough Council (MBC), PMP are delighted to announce the completion of the new and improved Stourbridge Glass Museum, which opened to the public this summer!
Situated at the heart of the Stourbridge Glass Quarter, The Red House Glass Cone is Grade II* listed and one of only four left in the UK. It is home to a hot glass studio, industrial collection and independent coffee shop, housing one of the finest world-wide holdings of British and international 17th, 18th, 19th and 20th century glass.
PMP were appointed Quantity Surveyor and Contract Administrator for the development and fit-out of new exhibition space, following the closure of the Broadfield House Glass Museum in 2015. Funded in-part by the British Glass Foundation (BGF), MBC, European Regional Development Fund (EDRF) and the National Lottery Heritage Fund (NLHF), the scheme began in January 2022, and involves the creative adaptation of the new space into a gallery that combines an exhibition area, hot glass studio and areas dedicated to hands-on activities for families and visitors.
The aim of the project was to achieve the client’s vision to create a dedicated centre that celebrates 400 years of quality glass-making in the West Midlands, and one that is clearly representative of the glass-making industry. The existing collection was used as the core element of an interactive journey to animate the visitor experience and reveal the stories of the people that enabled Stourbridge to lead the glass-making community.
We worked closely alongside the Contractor, The Hub, sub-consultants and a variety of specialist consultants to successfully combine elements of the glass cone with modern technologies to develop a museum that met the needs and expectations of the client. PMP were also successful in managing consultants and funding bodies to ensure tight budgetary control due to the project being lottery funded.
