Project scope

Situated in the heart of the Jewellery Quarter Conservation Area, the former Munn’s Brothers Photographic Works, once famed for developing films for companies like Boots the chemist, has been transformed into bespoke luxury apartments. Granted permission in 2019, this redevelopment addresses Birmingham’s housing shortage with 48 one-and-two-bed apartments across three distinct blocks. The design respects the street’s topography with stepped-roof heights and includes a communal lounge and shared entrance to promote activity in the quarter. The architecture pays homage to its photographic past with brick piers, reminiscent of film strips. Additionally, to ease congestion on the surrounding streets, the development offers secure parking, bicycle storage, and EV charging points, the perfect blend of contemporary living with historical reverence. The project was awarded the “Small Development of the Year Award 2023”
