Project scope

The redevelopment of the Old Black Lion Pub (OBL) in Northampton is a key initiative by the Churches Conservation Trust (CCT). Adjacent to the Grade I listed St Peter’s Church, under CCT’s care since 1998, the 16th-century OBL urgently needs repair. In 2016, CCT secured a £1.8m National Lottery Heritage Fund (NLHF) grant, with additional support from various sources. The project aims to transform the OBL into a self-sustaining community hub with a licensed pub/restaurant, accommodation, meeting rooms, and hire space. The refurbishment will sensitively restore the historic fabric and integrate modern systems, including state-of-the-art technologies for video streaming, security and sustainable energy. This transformation will restore the OBL as a community-serving venue, generate funds for the upkeep of St Peter’s Church, and bolster community engagement.
