Project Completion! – Aston University MB5 Laboratories

Aston University has announced the official opening of their new £3.3m pharmacy teaching laboratory!

Funded by the Office for Students (OfS), the project included the design and construction of Aston University’s new Pharmacy School, which officially opened its new teaching laboratories on 24 September 2024. PMP was appointed Quantity Surveyor, alongside Architect, Broadway Malyan, and Contractor, Interclass PLC.

The lab has the capacity to accommodate up to 83 graduate and post-graduate students at a time. The works also saw the creation of a fully functioning asepsis suite, which will allow MSc, MPharm, and Overseas Pharmacy Assessment Programme (OSPAP) students to prepare and trial a variety of treatment drugs, and manipulate formulas.

As part of Aston University’s 2030 Strategy, the building has been designed with inclusivity in mind, the state-of-the-art teaching laboratory has accessible facilities, featuring:

  • Height-adjustable benches and sinks
  • Fume hoods and safety cabinets
  • An audiovisual system which is noise cancelling and works with hearing aids
  • Carefully designed acoustics to reduce ambient noise levels, common in busy laboratories
  • Large visual screens that can be linked to optical magnification equipment
  • Real-time transcription software, which provides lecture subtitles on the screens.

The labs will enable staff to provide an enhanced educational experience to students, giving them access to the latest cutting-edge laboratory equipment in a comfortable, modern, and inclusive environment.
