Project Update! – Old Black Lion Pub, Northampton

We’re one month in on the site of the Grade II-listed Old Black Lion pub!

PMP is working alongside 2G Design and Client, Churches Conservation Trust (CCT) – a charity dedicated to protecting historic churches at risk. The Grade I listed St Peter’s Church was vested in CCT in 1998. As such, they are now delivering an ambitious project to regenerate the Old Black Lion (OBL), which lies adjacent to the Church. The pub was once the first inn for visitors approaching from the west and is now considered a valuable element of the townscape.

The project has been one of the team’s most fascinating to date. Originally the site burned down in the great Northampton fire of 1675, and was later restored as the Old Black Lion in 1720. As a result, archaeologists discovered some remarkable findings, some of which made the BBC news! (more info on this can be found here).

We’re now working alongside OMI Architects and Conservation Architect, Crosby Granger to transform OBL into vibrant community hubs including pubs and event spaces. The project aims to restore the building as a place that can once again serve the local community, as well as generate funds for the conservation of St Peter’s Church and support CCT’s work more broadly, ensuring long-term sustainability.

There project is made possible through funding from the National Lottery, HM Treasury’s Towns FundWest Northamptonshire Council, the Architectural Heritage Fund, and the West Northamptonshire Development Corporation.
